CurriculumChinese (Cantonese) Program (K1 to L11)
Chinese (Cantonese) Program offers 13 grades from junior kindergarten to grade 11 (K1 to L11) and accepts students from 3 years of age and up.
Students in junior grades learn pronunciation, writing, sentence structure, singing, and customs; while senior students receive training in essay writing, calligraphy, literature, geography, and history.
The Chinese (Cantonese) curriculum is specially designed to embrace Canadian and Chinese culture. Traditional Chinese characters are taught. Students will start from learning basic Chinese characters, and then proceed to phrases, sentences and finally, essays. In this way, students will be able to learn the language systematically. Chinese (Putonghua) Program (KP1 to P3)
A Chinese program using Putonghua as the teaching medium was initiated at North York Campus and Markham Campus in September 2007. Classes of Junior Kindergarten to Grade 3 (KP1 to P3) are offered at these two campuses. In 2009-2010, Putonghua classes will be added to the Etobicoke campus for Kindergarten (KP) students. These classes in 3 campuses are offered for students of 3 years old and up.
The specially designed kindergarten curriculum includes basic concepts such as numbers, big-small, up-down, objects that can be observed readily in students’ surroundings such as people, rain, dog, flowers, etc. The Chinese characters in the program materials are supplemented by lively illustrations and Hanyu Pinyin.
Textbooks and workbooks published by Jinan University (P.R. China) are used in Grade 1 to Grade 3. The pinyin phonetic system is used to teach Putonghua, and basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are also included. Simplified Chinese characters are taught.
Interaction is encouraged and students will learn the language in a cheerful learning environment. MSF Chinese School Mathematics program is based on the current Mathematics curriculum of the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training. The small class size allows the teacher to have more time to work with individual students. This helps the students extend the amount of time and experience they have with more difficult topics so that they may learn more out of each lesson both at MSF Chinese School and in their regular Ontario schools.
From Grade 1 to Grade 8 (M1-M8), the MSF Chinese School Math curriculum will cover the basics in topics with each lesson. This is to build the groundwork knowledge that each student must have in order to continue in the subject of mathematics. When the student proceeds to higher grades, new concepts and theories will be added progressively. These new concepts and theories are taught using the foundation knowledge gained in previous levels so that both the new concepts and theories are learned and, at the same time, previous knowledge can be practiced and reviewed. To reinforce learning, the student is required to complete supplementary exercises after each lesson. Besides, regular reviews and tests are conducted to monitor and assess the students’ progress. Based on the performance in class as well as in exercises, reviews and tests, teachers will have a comprehensive understanding of individual students’ strengths and weaknesses, and will be able to work with them to bring out their bests. The Mon Sheong Math curriculum and exercises have been reviewed and revised in the summer of 2006. Teaching materials of Grade 1 to Grade 8 (M1-M8) have been updated and additional supplementary exercises have been incorporated into the program. New course materials of Grade 9 to Grade 12 (M9-M12) have been developed, which include 3 major components of Key Notes, Examples and Practice Exercises in each chapter. By following these steps, students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve complicated problems. Classes offered: North York Campus: Grade 9 to Grade 12 (M9-M12) Etobicoke Campus: Grade 1 to Grade 12 (M1-M12) Markham Campus: Grade 1 to Grade 12 (M1-M12)
