Chinese (Putonghua) Program (KP1 to P5)
A Chinese program using Putonghua as the teaching medium was initiated at North York Campus and Markham Campus in September 2007. In 2011-2012, Putonghua classes of Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5 (KP1 to P5) will be offered at four campuses. These classes are offered for students of 3 years old and up.
The specially designed kindergarten curriculum includes basic concepts such as numbers, big-small, up-down, objects that can be observed readily in students’ surroundings such as people, rain, dog, flowers, etc. The Chinese characters in the program materials are supplemented by lively illustrations and Hanyu Pinyin.
Textbooks and workbooks published by Jinan University (P.R. China) are used in Grade 1 to Grade 5. The pinyin phonetic system is used to teach Putonghua, and basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are also included. Simplified Chinese characters are taught.
Interaction is encouraged and students will learn the language in a cheerful learning environment.
