“Close-Knit: Stitching the Gap”
Initiated by Mon Sheong Foundation Youth Group, the “Close-Knit: Stitching the Gap” knitting marathon was successfully held on January 29, 2011 at Mon Sheong Volunteer Centre in Scarborough. This 12-hour long event aimed to bring youth and senior participants together to knit 457 scarves for all residents of Mon Sheong Long-Term Care Centres. The scarves were delivered to the residents by the Youth Group before the Valentine’s Day.

Celebration of the “Year of Rabbit”
Mon Sheong Richmond Hill Long-Term Care Centre celebrated the Chinese New Year on February 4, 2011. Mr. Tim Kwan, Chairman and President of Mon Sheong Foundation, and members of the Board of Directors wished all residents the best of luck in the Year of Rabbit. Mayor Dave Barrow and other honourable guests from the Town of Richmond Hill including Mr. Vito Spatafora, Ms. Brenda Hogg, Mr. Castro Liu and Mr. Carmine Perrelli also joined the celebration and sent their warmest greetings to the residents.

Mon Sheong Golden Seniors Celebration Banquet
The Mon Sheong Golden Seniors Celebration took place on February 26, 2011 at MEC Markham Event Centre, attracting a record attendance of over 800 guests. The event aimed to recognize seniors for their contributions to their families and the community, as well as promoting traditional Chinese virtues of love and respect among the younger generation. Highlights of the banquet included the ‘face changing’ performance by famous artist Harry Hu and the impromptu writing by Master Lee Fu Hing.

Visit by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and His Wife
The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, and his wife Laureen Harper visited Mon Sheong Richmond Hill Long-Term Care Centre on April 15, 2011 and sent their regards to a 110-year-old resident, the eldest resident of the Centre. They also joined a tea ceremony and showed great interest in Chinese tea culture. Mon Sheong Foundation was grateful for the couple’s visit amid their busy schedule and was encouraged to carry on with its work in promoting Chinese culture.

Volunteer Appreciation Dinner Attended by 400 Mon Sheong Volunteers
Mon Sheong Foundation organized the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner to thank and recognize all its volunteers for their dedicated contributions. About 400 volunteers attended the Dinner, with 86 volunteers and 34 teams being recognized at the Dinner for their outstanding services. Also, a total of 32 Mon Sheong volunteers were given the Ontario Volunteer Service Awards for their continuous and outstanding services ranging from 5 to 25 years.

109-year-old Resident’s Birthday Party Attended by Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism
The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalsim, visited Mon Sheong Scarborough Long-Term Care Centre and celebrated the 109th birthday of the eldest resident of the Centre. All residents were greatly impressed by his friendliness and a handmade craft was presented to him by a resident representative.

Fun Run & Walk
The 25th Fun Run and Walk was held on May 8, 2011 (Mother’s Day) at the Milliken District Park in Scarborough. Hundreds of participants took part in the 5K walk and 5K run to raise funds for Mon Sheong while paying tribute to mothers on this special day. The “Doggie Dress Up Contest” came back and succeeded in adding fun to the event. Approximately $80,000 was raised through this event.

Heart-warming Visit by Professor Lap-Chee Tsui
Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, Vice-Chancellor and President of The University of Hong Kong as well as a Mon Sheong Ambassador, visited the Mon Sheong Home for the Aged and participated in the annual Fun Run & Walk during his short stay in Toronto in early May, 2011. He was pleased to witness the rapid growth and quality services of Mon Sheong Foundation and would continue to promote Mon Sheong’s excellent services overseas. Professor Tsui was the Co-Chair of the Chinese School Committee of Mon Sheong Foundation prior to his current appointment with The University of Hong Kong in 2002.

Mon Sheong & Yee Hong Joint Advocacy: Long-Term Care Bed Proposition
Mon Sheong Foundation and Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care, the two leading non-profit long-term care providers in the GTA Chinese community, jointly advocated for the Ontario government to grant 500 new long-term care bed licenses so that new facilities could be established to shorten the waiting list for long-term care beds. At the joint press conference held on September 1, 2011, Mr. Tim Kwan, Chairman and President of Mon Sheong Foundation and Dr. Joseph Y.K. Wong, Founder of Yee Hong, together with Mr. Bernard Cheung and Ms. Florence Wong, CEOs of Mon Sheong and Yee Hong respectively, explained the details of the Joint Advocacy and requested the Chinese community to write to their MPP candidates to express the needs of the Chinese community.

Graduation Ceremony of Mon Sheong Foundation Chinese School
The graduation ceremony of Mon Sheong Foundation Chinese School was held in June, 2011, in which various awards were given to outstanding students at different levels of study. Also, Dr. Sim Fai Liu Awards for Outstanding Achievement were presented to four students while Ping Shao Quan Awards for Academic Achievement were offered to many others. The first-ever Year Book in CD format was also produced for free distribution to parents.

Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting of Mon Sheong Foundation was held on June 23, 2011. In addition to reports by all committees for the previous year, members also discussed future plans and elected a new Board of Directors for the coming year.

“How to Maximize Your Tax Benefit Through Planned Giving” Seminar
Planning for future is one of the traditional Chinese virtues. People work hard for most of their lives to accumulate money, either for sharing their wealth with their families and descendants or making donations to support those they care. To enable the public to have a better understanding of planned giving, Mon Sheong Foundation organized a series of planned giving seminars in 2011. Experienced lawyers, chartered accountants and insurance personnel were invited to share their professional knowledge in life insurance, wills and bequests, as well as related tax benefits.

Mon Sheong Showcase: Our Present and Future
Mon Sheong Foundation remains steadfast in fulfilling its mission of “Caring for the Elderly and Nurturing the Young” in the past 47 years. Two showcase sessions were held in July, 2011 to briefly report on Mon Sheong’s existing services as well as its future plans. In future years, Mon Sheong Foundation will develop Community and Volunteer Services Centres, Markham Mon Sheong Court and the new initiative of providing private care services. The Showcase was highly commended by donors, sponsors and supporters.

Toonies Campaign
The Toonies Campaign was kicked off on July 27, 2011 and will end in late January, 2012. It aims to generate $200,000 to support various programs and services of Mon Sheong’s three Long-Term Care Centres and the Adult Day Care Centre.

The 3rd Anniversary of Adult Day Program
September 16, 2011 marked the 3rd Anniversary of the Adult Day Program of Mon Sheong Foundation. A party was organized to celebrate this special occasion. Mr. Eddie Tsang, Vice-President of Mon Sheong Foundation and Ms. Teresa Tazumi, Chair of the Home Committee, also joined the celebration and had an enjoyable morning with the staff and volunteers. Besides, souvenirs were presented to volunteers to recognize their dedicated support to the Adult Day Program.

Mon Sheong Telethon was broadcast live in Fairchild Television on September 18, 2011. With the generous support from donors across the nation and the full support of our many sponsors, Mon Sheong Telethon 2011 succeeded in raising over $163,000.

Silver Jubilee Awards of Excellence Presented to 10 Outstanding High School Graduates
Sponsored by HSBC Bank Canada, the 2011 Silver Jubilee Awards of Excellence were presented to 10 outstanding high school graduates from the Greater Toronto Area during the award presentation ceremony, which was held at Mon Sheong Scarborough Long-Term Care Centre on October 3, 2011. Each award recipients received a scholarship ranging from $500 to $2,000 along with gifts for recognition of their outstanding achievements in academic pursuits, community involvement and leadership.
In past years, the award presentation ceremony took place during Mon Sheong’s Cathay Ball fundraising gala. This year, it was made a separate event in order to raise the community’s awareness of the Silver Jubilee Awards and the importance of youth development.

Trip to China 2011 – Expand Your Horizons
Trip to China – Expand Your Horizons was organized in mid-July, 2011 for the third consecutive year. During the 14-day trip, more than 20 participants visited four major cities, including Beijing, Xian, Jinan and Shanghai. They also paid visits to two seniors’ homes and the Lord Mengchang Mausoleum, along with their academic exchanges with students of two universities in Beijing. Also, a new “Multimedia Challenge” was introduced in the Trip to China 2011, which aimed to capture the participants’ discoveries and experiences in Chinese living styles and social interaction.

Visit by Shandong Delegation
The Shandong Delegation, led by Ms. Wang Lin, visited Mon Sheong Foundation in October, 2011 and was warmly received by Mr. Tim Kwan, Chairman and President of Mon Sheong Foundation and several members of the Board of Directors. Madam Meifang Zhang, Deputy Consul General and Mr. Xiaoguang Shi, Consul of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto also joined the delegation in the visit. Mr. Tim Kwan also took this opportunity to thank the Shandong provincial government for receiving Trip to China participants in the past three years and helping them to expand their horizons.

Cathay Ball 2011
Cathay Ball 2011 was held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on November 5, 2011 with “An Evening in London” as its theme. In addition to the celebration of its 20th Anniversary, highlights of this annual fundraising gala included the exhilarating live auction, the silent auction featuring approximately 300 exquisite items, the breathtaking “Winner-Takes-All” special draw, and the excellent performances by The Liverpool 4 and Elton John impersonator.

Mural Campaign
Mon Sheong Scarborough Long-Term Care Centre launched the Mural Campaign in 2011, with the aim of raising $700,000 to improve the home’s facilities and equipment for the benefit of its residents. The mural “Presenting Peaches of Longevity” is displayed at a prominent place in the lobby of the Centre. On the right-hand-side of the mural, there is a recognition legend made up of 288 squares. Donors who donate $1,000 or above will have their names engraved in these squares for recognition.

Community Christmas Party for the Seniors
Held in its 40th year, the Community Christmas Party for the Seniors was held at Mon Sheong Home for the Aged in downtown Toronto on December 4, 2011. Complimentary savory festive turkey lunch, fun-filled games and performances, lucky draws and fabulous bring-home gifts were arranged to share the joy of Christmas with the seniors in the community.
