Ontario Lieutenant Governor Edith Dumont Celebrates Lunar New Year with Mon Sheong Seniors and Young Students

Ontario’s newly appointed Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable Edith Dumont, visits Mon Sheong Stouffville Long-Term Care Centre on February 9. On the eve of the Lunar New Year, as the vibrant spirit of the festive season fills the air, the Lieutenant Governor graces the facility with her presence, joined by Chairman of Mon Sheong Foundation, Tim Kwan; President, Garth Low; and members of the Board. Her Honour enjoys Lunar New Year performances by students from Mon Sheong Chinese School and engages in heartwarming interactions with the elderly residents. Her Honour also samples traditional Lunar New Year delicacies, leaving a profound impression of Chinese traditional culture.

Tim Kwan remarked, “We are deeply honoured by the gracious visit of Her Honour, marking her first visit to a Chinese organization since her installation last year. This visit serves as a special gift to Mon Sheong as we celebrate our 60th anniversary this year. The Lieutenant Governor, with her distinguished career in education, stands as an exemplary educator and diversity advocate. Mon Sheong is dedicated to ‘caring for the elderly and nurturing the young’ and has been committed to promoting Chinese heritage in Canada. Our Chinese school has a history of over 55 years. It was particularly meaningful to have student representatives attend the event, performing a Lunar New Year song ‘Congratulations’ to extend New Year’s greetings to the Lieutenant Governor and the elderly residents. Mon Sheong Stouffville Long-Term Care Centre stands as Ontario’s first long-term care facility completed and operational during the pandemic, serving for over two years now.”

During the visit to the long-term care centre, the Lieutenant Governor warmly interacts with elderly residents, learning about the environment and their life in the Home. While at the Stouffville Long-Term Care Centre, the Lieutenant Governor takes a moment to glimpse at the neighbouring new long-term care centre under construction.
