On April 16, 2026, Mon Sheong Foundation held a celebration of generosity and compassion to honour the Fred Lai Family Foundation for their $3 million gift towards the “Because We Care” Capital Campaign. This supports Mon Sheong’s efforts in developing new long-term care centres and providing a place of belonging for our seniors.
The warm and moving celebration was attended by the caring family of Fred Lai, whose beloved wife, Margaret, has been a resident of Mon Sheong Richmond Hill Long-Term Care Centre since 2022, and Member of the Home’s Family Council. Stephanie Wong, Chief Executive Officer of Mon Sheong Foundation, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Lai Family’s transformative gift.
“Ever since we launched the “Because We Care” campaign in 2019, we have sought partners who share our heart for the elderly. Today, we welcome such a partner,” said Wong, “We are so delighted that the Lai Family’s confidence in our devotion to delivering quality care translates into such material support. This brings us one significant step closer to bringing care to more people in need.”
The Because We Care Capital Campaign was born from a simple belief: we care, because our seniors deserve the best in long-term care. It fuels the expansion of Mon Sheong Foundation’s care capacity and the continued enhancement of facilities. The Lai Family’s kindness is a shining example of community care. Mon Sheong hopes their generosity will inspire others to join this vital mission.
For Fred Lai, this donation reflects the compassionate care he has witnessed firsthand at Mon Sheong. “Through many of my visits, I have seen the kindness, patience, and professionalism shown by the staff,” said Lai, “The cheque my family presented today is more than just a financial contribution, it reflects our shared commitment to supporting seniors by improving their lives, strengthening the staff who care for them, and ensuring centres like this remain places of comfort, dignity, and belonging. I hope this contribution helps Mon Sheong Foundation continue its important work—expanding programs, enhancing facilities and supporting these important people who make these centres feel like home.”
Mon Sheong takes pride in its resident-centred care. Resident care teams, medical professionals, social workers, activation teams, and support staff all work tirelessly to create a safe, vibrant and comfortable environment for every resident.
“Mon Sheong’s delivery of resident-centred care is all fueled by the compassion of donors like the Lai Family, who bolster our efforts in enhancing our services and elevating our facilities,” says Eumie Leung, Chief Operating Officer of Mon Sheong Foundation, “The Lai Family’s
contribution validates our mission and empowers us to uphold our promise of excellence in senior care.”
The development of long-term care centres is a massive undertaking. Each care bed requires an investment of $480,000. Mon Sheong has been galvanizing support for the construction of new care homes through the Because We Care Capital Campaign.
Thanks to the community’s trust in Mon Sheong Foundation, such efforts are already yielding results. Mon Sheong opened the Stouffville Long-Term Care Centre and Dr. Paul Woo Long-Term Care Centre in 2021 and 2025 respectively. This fall, the Foundation is set to welcome residents at their first long-term care home in Markham. These provide a total of 864 new care beds for our community.
Mon Sheong invites the community to join hands in extending care to more people in need. To learn more about the “Because We Care” Capital Campaign, please visit https://www.monsheong.org/capital-campaign/.
