Mon Sheong Foundation Building a New Senior Care Campus in Markham

Markham, ON (June 28, 2021) – Mon Sheong Foundation is delighted to announce their new Senior Care Campus will be in Markham. The new campus consists of a 160-bed long-term care facility, Mon Sheong Court senior apartments, and a Personal Support Workers (PSW) training centre. The campus will be located at 36 Apple Creek Boulevard. Details of the project were shared with public at the community information meeting on June 23, 2021, hosted by City of Markham, and garnered support from the City. The groundbreaking is anticipated for autumn of this year.

Tim Kwan, Chairman of Mon Sheong Foundation, said, “This campus is conveniently located just north of Highway 7 and Woodbine Avenue intersection. We will be building a 160-bed long-term care centre alongside an approximately 250-unit Mon Sheong Court as well as a PSW training facility. This Senior Care Campus will be built in accordance with Passive House standards, an energy efficient construction concept, which greatly reduces energy consumption. We are working closely with the provincial, and municipal governments and Ministry of Long-Term Care on the details of this facility. Once details are finalized, we will advise the public. We hope to receive the full support of the community so that we can bring more senior care services to those in need.”

The long-term care centre is a part of the 768 beds announced by the Ministry of Long-Term Care in March. This location will be Mon Sheong’s first long-term care facility in Markham. According to the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), there are over 30,000 long-term care beds in the GTA with a waitlist of 73,000 people. This means that, on average, there are 2.4 people waiting for one bed. Mon Sheong Foundation’s three long-term care centres have a waitlist of over 6,500 people, with an average of 14 people waiting for one bed. This number has tripled within 10 years. In total, Mon Sheong currently operates 457 beds.. On average, wait times are between five to seven years. These numbers reflect the urgent need for long-term care as the population continues to age.

Mon Sheong is currently in the progress of completing their fourth long-term care centre in Stouffville. This 320-bed facility will be operational in July of this year. Presently, the Stouffville facility is doing final preparations before welcoming residents. LHIN has begun accepting applications to this facility to relieve the pressure for families in need. Shortly after LHIN began accepting applications, the amount of applications received exceeded 320 and a waitlist has been created. This proves that the need for long-term care is urgent.

The Stouffville facility is the first long-term care home that was announced in 2018 to be completed 18 months ahead of the government mandated deadline. The facility’s innovative design and focus on Infection Prevention and Control is above and beyond Ontario’s Long Term Care Design Manual. Mon Sheong is keeping the health and safety of their residents at the forefront.
