2020 Highlights
Food Bank Donation
While COVID-19 is affecting the community, Mon Sheong Foundation understands that it is a difficult time for many people who need the help of food banks. On March 23rd, Mon Sheong Foundation donated $50,000 to four food banks in the GTA. We also raised awareness in the community to help those in need, spreading the charitable spirit.
Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day at all three long-term care centres and two Private Care Centres were different this year. Due to the pandemic, families were unable to celebrate Mother’s Day with our residents, so we specially asked DJs from local Chinese radio stations to record lovely Mother’s Day messages for the many mothers in residence and encouraging words for the essential worker mothers at the facilities.
Father’s Day
To send some care to seniors during the pandemic, six-year-old Charlotte and 15 of her friends (between the ages of 4-8) handmade 60 unique Father’s Day cards for the residents of Scarborough Long-Term Care Centre. The many fathers in residence were overjoyed to receive these creatively adorable cards.
Fun Run & Walk Online Challenge
This year’s Fun Run & Walk, for the first time ever, became an online challenge, encouraging people to include exercise in their daily life. Participants recorded their daily steps until they accomplished their goal of 6,500 steps (approximately 5 km). Fun Run & Walk 2020 Online Challenge raised over $170,000, which went towards the building of Stouffville Long-Term Care Centre.
Mid-Autumn Festival
For the past seven years, our Scarborough Community Volunteer & Services Centre (CVS) celebrated the Mid-Autumn festival together with seniors in our community. Due to the pandemic, this year, through R.E.A.C.H. for Aging Well, our CVS changed gears and instead gave 100 registered seniors a celebratory gift bag at the end of September. Registration was full within three hours of opening. Every registered senior received a gift bag and had the opportunity to enter a lucky draw.
Stouffville Legion’s National Seniors Day Event Fundraiser
On October 3, we supported the Stouffville Legion’s National Seniors Fundraising Event by taking part in their socially distanced car wash and BBQ. Although the event was socially distanced, we were delighted to step up and support local senior communities.
Annual General Meeting
Mon Sheong Foundation’s Annual General Meeting was held online on Oct 22. On top of reporting the activities from the past year and unveiling the plans for next year, Board members of 2020-2021 were elected. Two new members, Kam Liu and Sarah Xiao, were voted onto the board.
