2021 Highlights
Home for the Aged CNY Lion Dance
Hong Luck Kung Fu Club volunteered to bring some New Year cheers to the residents of Mon Sheong Home for the Aged and performed a lion dance outside the facility. The amazing performance was live-streamed on Mon Sheong’s social media, with our residents enjoying the show in the comfort of their ‘Home’.
Radiothon/768 Bed Licences Announcement
Mon Sheong Radiothon, partnered with A1 Chinese Radio, was held on March 18 and raised over $373,000 to support the 320-bed new Stouffville Long-Term Care Centre.
The Ontario government granted 768 new long-term care bed licences to Mon Sheong Foundation for three locations across the GTA on March 18.
Minister Cho Visits Mon Sheong
The Honourable Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility made an announcement at Mon Sheong on March 26. The Ontario government invested $30 million to help retirement homes with unexpected pandemic costs. Mon Sheong Private Care is one of the beneficiaries.
Mon Sheong Receives Additional Funding
New Horizons for Seniors Program announced on March 31 that Mon Sheong Foundation would receive additional $27,000 in funding to create more programs for seniors, improving their connection to the community.
Fun Run and Walk
Fun Run and Walk was held virtually from June 1 to July 4. Participants were encouraged to exercise in their daily lives. The event raised over $215,000.
Annual General Meeting
Mon Sheong Foundation’s Annual General Meeting was held online on June 24. The Board of Directors reported on last year’s progress and next year’s direction.
Politicians visit Markham Senior Care Campus Location
Minister Steve Clark, MPP Billy Pang, and Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti visited the future site of Mon Sheong Markham Senior Care Campus. This Campus will feature many new and needed services, including a long-term care centre, senior living apartments, and a personal support workers (PSW) training facility.
Golden Jubilee Scholarship & Panel
The Golden Jubilee Scholarship Award Presentation was held online on August 12, followed by a panel discussion. Congratulations to the new recipients, Aishwarya Krishnan and Christine Lin.
The Golden Jubilee Scholarship Panel featured Dr. Jack Leong, Prof. Brad Klump, and Golden Jubilee Alumni Cassidy Bereskin and Joshua Tuazon. Our students had a great time discussing a variety of subjects.
Stouffville Long-Term Care Centre Plaque Unveiling
To thank Stouffville Council’s support of the new long-term care centre in Stouffville, a special plaque was presented to the town. Mayor Lovatt , Town Council members and community leaders attended the unveiling ceremony.
Golden Seniors Celebration Online Performance
Mon Sheong Golden Seniors Celebration Online Performance was held on September 18. The one-hour event was filled with wonderful performances and a lucky draw, attracting over 600 registrations online, in celebration of Mid-Autumn Festival.
Councillor Castro Liu distributes Moon Cake to Seniors
Councillor Castro Liu visited Richmond Hill Long-Term Care Centre to distribute moon cakes to the residents in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
RBC’s Donation of 400 Lunch Boxes
On October 1, RBC gifted close to 400 lunch boxes to front line workers at Mon Sheong Long-Term Care Centres, thanking them for their hard work during the pandemic and their care and love of the seniors.
Cathay Ball
The 29th Cathay Ball was held on November 6 with the theme of “Caring Beyond Boundaries”. This year’s Cathay Ball was held in hybrid style at the Chinese Canadian Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto. Representatives from all three levels of government joined us for an intimate dinner and was able to watch the spectacular performances with our guests on the virtual platform.
Markham Senior Care Campus Groundbreaking Ceremony
On November 15, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at 36 Apple Creek Boulevard for our Markham Senior Care Campus. This facility will house a long-term care centre, senior living apartments, and a personal support workers training facility. Guests in attendance including government officials from both the Ontario government and Markham City Council; Mon Sheong Foundation’s Board of Directors; and friends of Mon Sheong. This facility is projected to be complete by 2025.
Minister Phillips and Minister Bethlenfalvy Announcement on New Bed Licences to Mon Sheong
Finance Minister Bethlenfalvy and Long_Term Care Minister Phillips visited the future site of our Markham Senior Care Campus on December 3 to announce that Mon Sheong was awarded additional 32 long-term care bed licences, bringing the number of long-term care beds at this facility to 192.
