10-year plan press conference

10-Year Development Plan for Senior Care

Mon Sheong Foundation held a press conference announcing their 10-Year Development Plan to add 600 new long-term care beds in multiple locations across the Greater Toronto Area through three phases. Pending approval from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, this plan will help ease the wait time for long-term care beds for seniors. $150 million will be required for this plan to succeed.

Chinese New Year Celebrations

Chinese Artists Society of Toronto Youth Orchestra visited Markham Mon Sheong Court on February 19 (third day of CNY). They performed classic Chinese music for our residents. We received a visit from Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto, He Wei and MPP Soo Wong during Chinese New Year at Scarborough Mon Sheong Court, bringing good wishes to all of the residents.

Mon Sheong Golden Seniors Celebration

The Celebration, held on April 7, was packed with close to 800 guests in attendance. Our guests came to not only support Mon Sheong but also express their care and love for the Community seniors. Officials from three levels of government were present and adorable children gifted our seniors with homemade cards from our Chinese Schools.

Minister Moridi’s Announcement

On April 27,  the Honourable Dr. Reza Moridi, Minister of Research, Innovation and Science, announced at Mon Sheong Richmond Hill Long-Term Care Centre that the Ontario government is creating 636 new long-term care beds in York Region, of which 320 will be assigned to Mon Sheong Foundation.

Fun Run and Walk

The 32nd Fun Run and Walk was held on May 13, Mother’s Day, gathering 600 participants at Richmond Green Sports Centre and Park in support of our work around the community. This year, we continued our special Paws and Claws and indoor carnival. We also had our Celebrity Wheelchair race to show the daily life of a person using a wheelchair.

100th Birthday Party

On June 2, numerous guests gathered at the Mon Sheong Home for the Aged to celebrate 15 residents over the age of 100. At 110, Mr. Tak Wong and Mrs. Foon Hay Lum are our oldest residents. Everyone had a great time and received greetings and wishes for their health and longevity.

Fairchild Radio visits Adult Day Program

Fairchild Radio DJs visited Adult Day Program in June. They spent a day chatting with the attendees and making cots out of milk bags to send to Haiti. The day was bursting with happiness as Fairchild Radio DJs got to meet seniors in the community and take part in such a meaningful activity.

Annual General Meeting

Mon Sheong Foundation held our Annual General Meeting on June 21, where our Board of Directors reported on the organization’s activities over the past year. We welcomed Ron Tse, Tak Wong and Joyce Young to the board.

Chinese School summer camp

Chinese Immersion Summer Camp Students’ Presentation

On July 27, Chinese Immersion Summer Camp had their Students’ Presentation day. Parents were able to see their children’s artwork, as well as singing and dancing performances. What an excellent way to highlight skills the campers have learned at Summer Camp!

Telethon

Mon Sheong Telethon successfully took place on September 16. Public response was very passionate, with more than $208,000 flowing in from across the country. The national broadcast gave our viewers a glimpse into our senior care, volunteer services and our efforts to promote Chinese heritage and culture.

Seniors around the community gathered at our Scarborough Community and Volunteer Services Centre on September 22 to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. Wonderful performances and raffle draws happened alongside a delicious lunch.

Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, Hon. Jean-Yves Duclos, came to our Richmond Hill Long-Term Care Centre to announce improvements to Employment Insurance on September 25. During his time there, Minister Duclos took part in morning activities and toured the Long-term Care Centre and the Adult Day Care Centre.

Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant Contestants Meet with Seniors

Our Richmond Hill Long-Term Care Centre was pleased to welcome this year’s Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant Contestants on October 26. Each of the ladies joined a resident to fashion a beautiful decorative piece. Contestants performed and handed out presents, creating a very lively environment.

Japanese Professional Study Group visits Richmond Hill Home

On November 1, a Japanese Professional study group visited our Richmond Hill Long-Term Care Centre to learn about long-term care programs. They spent a morning speaking with the staff and toured the facility.

Cathay Ball

Over 1,000 guests gathered at Metro Toronto Convention Centre south building on November 10 in support of the 27th Cathay Ball. Amongst our guests were members from all three levels of government. This year’s Cathay Ball brought the sensual heat of Argentina to Toronto, awarding a Best Dressed and a Best Dressed on Theme award to guests in attendance.

After a successful Cathay Ball, Salvatore Ferragamo held an exclusive cocktail event at their boutique in Yorkdale Shopping Centre. Over 20 VIP guests attended the event in support of Mon Sheong Foundation.

On December 2, 260 Chinese seniors residing downtown, participated in the 47th annual Community Christmas Party for Seniors at the Mon Sheong Home for the Aged. Highlighted by a festive turkey lunch, the program was filled with entertaining performances, including one by local artist, Jonas M., who sang a series of classics and distributed fabulous gifts to the guests.
