2017 Highlights

New Year Celebrations at Mon Sheong
Residents at Mon Sheong had performers and politicians visit during Chinese New Year. The Chinese Artists Society of Toronto Youth Orchestra visited Scarborough Long-Term Care Centre on January 29th (2nd day of CNY). They performed many classic pieces for our residents. We received a visit from the Toronto Elegant Lions Club at Markham Mon Sheong Court on February 3rd (7th day of CNY). They sang festive songs with our residents and handed out gifts and red envelopes, creating a warm and cheerful atmosphere.

Mon Sheong Golden Seniors Celebration
The Golden Seniors Celebration, held on April 8, was packed with close to 800 guests in attendance. Our guests came to not only support Mon Sheong but to also express their care and love for our seniors. All three levels of government were present and we held our first “These are our Grandparents” essay contest at our Chinese Schools.

Fun Run & Walk
The 31st Fun Run & Walk was held on May 14, gathering close to 800 participants at the Richmond Green Sports Centre and Park in support of our work around the community. In addition to our run and walk, a special Paws and Claws 5K and an indoor carnival was added to the morning’s excitement. There was also a Celebrity Wheelchair race, meant to show the daily life of a person using a wheelchair. What a memorable way to honour moms on Mother’s Day!

100th Birthday Party
Numerous guests gathered at the Mon Sheong Home for the Aged to celebrate 11 residents over the age of 100. At 109, Mr. Tak Wong is our oldest male resident, and Mrs. Wai Chun Li, at 104, is our oldest female resident. Everyone had a great time and received greetings and wishes for their health and longevity.

Annual General Meeting
Mon Sheong Foundation held our Annual General Meeting on June 22, where our Board of Directors reported on the organization’s activities over the past year. We welcomed Christopher Ho, Andy Lam, Jeffery Mah, Joseph Tsang, and Francis Tsui to the board.

Chinese School Graduation Ceremonies
Outstanding students were recognized at the Mon Sheong Foundation Chinese School graduation ceremonies in early June. Awards and scholarships were awarded to exceptional students. Consul Li Sining of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto was on hand to congratulate students at the North York campus ceremony.

Mon Sheong Adult Day Program visits Summer Camp
On August 2, Adult Day Program paid the Chinese Immersion Summer Camp a visit. The day was filled with various performances from the students and from the Adult Day Program seniors. Afterwards, they enjoyed activities and games together. It was a very fun day for everybody.

Mon Sheong Telethon
The Mon Sheong Telethon successfully took place on September 10. Public response was very passionate, with more than $210,000 flowing in from across the country. The national broadcast gave our viewers a glimpse into our senior care, community support services and our efforts to promote Chinese heritage and culture.

Mid-Autumn Festival Party
The Scarborough Community & Volunteer Services Centre hosted the Mid-Autumn Festival Party on September 30, inviting 100 seniors from the community together for a complimentary celebration. Aside from the hearty lunch, there were also great performances, games, and lucky draws.

Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant Contestants Meets with Seniors
Our Richmond Hill Long-Term Care Centre was pleased to welcome this year’s Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant Contestants on October 31. Each of the ladies joined a resident to fashion a beautiful decorative piece. Contestants performed and handed out presents, creating a very lively environment.

Cathay Ball: Under the Northern Lights
Over a thousand guests, each more elegant than the last, gathered at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on November 4 in support of the 26th Cathay Ball. Amongst our guests were members of all three levels of government. This year’s Cathay Ball dazzled guests by incorporating the beautiful colours of the Northern Lights with Canada 150 themed decorations, creating a truly beautiful atmosphere.

Cartier
After a successful Cathay Ball, Cartier held an exclusive cocktail party at their boutique in Yorkdale Mall. 50 people attended this party in support of Mon Sheong Foundation.

Community Christmas Party for Seniors
On December 3, 250 Chinese elders residing downtown participated in the 46th annual Community Christmas Party for Seniors at the Mon Sheong Home for the Aged. Highlighted by a festive turkey lunch, the program was filled with entertaining performances, including one by local artist, Jonas M., who sang a series of classics and distributed fabulous gifts to the elderly.
