2019 Highlights
Stouffville Long-Term Care Centre’s Groundbreaking Ceremony
Mon Sheong Foundation broke ground on our fourth long-term care centre on January 29. This new 320-bed home will become the largest long-term care centre in Stouffville, which is scheduled to be operational by 2022. Close to 100 guests, including officials from three levels of government, braved the cold to celebrate the beginning of this purposeful project.
Chinese New Year Celebrations
40 members of the Chinese Artists Society of Toronto Youth Orchestra visited Richmond Hill Long-Term Care Centre on February 10 (the 6th day of Chinese New Year), bringing popular festive music to residents. MP Leona Alleslev brought greetings to Richmond Hill Mon Sheong Court on February 13 (the 9th day of Chinese New Year).
Radiothon
Mon Sheong Radiothon was aired across the GTA on Sing Tao A1 Chinese Radio (AM 1540) on March 21 and the response was tremendous. In total, we raised over $200,000 for the construction of our Mon Sheong Stouffville Long-Term Care Centre.
MP Alice Wong Visits Mon Sheong Court
Hon. Alice Wong, MP visited Richmond Hill Mon Sheong Court on March 29, bringing well wishes to the residents.
Mon Sheong Golden Seniors Celebration
The Celebration, held on April 6, was packed with over 800 guests and seniors from the community. Three levels of government officials were present and wonderful performances from local artiste, Jonas M., and youths from Georgia’s Dance & Arts Cultural Centre kept guests entertained and delighted.
Minister Kirsty Duncan Visits Mon Sheong Court
Hon. Dr. Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sports visited Richmond Hill Mon Sheong Court on April 24. She took part in the Morning Healthy Exercise class and joined residents for Coffee Morning to discuss their healthy habits and share some laughs.
Fun Run & Walk
The 33rd Fun Run & Walk, on June 9, gathered over 600 participants at the Richmond Green Sports Centre and Park in support of our Stouffville Long-Term Care project. In addition to our run and walk, we included a large variety of game booths. Participants also enjoyed performances and a light lunch.
100th Birthday Party
On June 15, more than a hundred guests gathered at the Mon Sheong Home for the Aged to celebrate 14 residents over the age of 100. At 111, Mr. Tak Wong and Mrs. Foon Hay Lum are our oldest residents. Everyone had a great time and received greetings and wishes for their health and longevity.
Annual General Meeting
Mon Sheong Foundation held our Annual General Meeting on June 20, where our Board of Directors reported on the organization’s activities over the past year and elected existing members to new positions. Tim Kwan, Chairman; Doris Chan, First Vice-Chairman; Stephen Wong, Second Vice-Chairman; Garth Low, President; David Cheng, Vice-President; Jo-Cy Lee, Vice-President; Amy Tam, Vice-President; Francis Tsui, Vice-President; Dennis Au-Yeung, Treasurer and Chair of Honourary Governors; and Jeffrey Mah, Secretary.
Chinese Immersion Summer Camp Students’ Presentation
On July 26, Chinese Immersion Summer Camp had their Students’ Presentation day. Parents were delighted to see their children’s artwork, as well as singing and dancing performances. What an excellent way to highlight skills the campers have learned at Summer Camp!
MP Leona Alleslev Visits Summer Students
MP Leona Alleslev had a meeting with this year’s Summer Students working at our Richmond Hill location on July 31. They had a lively conversation, diving into the students’ responsibilities, aspirations and school plans.
Golden Jubilee Scholarship Awards Ceremony
The Golden Jubilee Scholarship Awards Ceremony took place on August 8 at Richmond Hill Long-Term Care Centre. The award encourages continued excellence from its winners. This year, recipients were taken on a tour of the long-term care facility.
Minister Raymond Cho Visits Mon Sheong Court
Hon. Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility dropped by Richmond Hill Mon Sheong Court on August 8 to make an echo announcement on providing police officers with more tools to respond quickly and effectively to missing persons investigations. He also took in the recreational activities with the residents who were excited to show off the many programs offered at their home.
Mid-Autumn Festival
100 seniors around the community gathered at our Scarborough Mon Sheong Community and Volunteer Services Centre on September 7 to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. Wonderful performances and lucky draws were enjoyed alongside a delicious lunch.
Minister Mary Ng visits Mon Sheong Court
Hon. Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business and Export Promotion visited Markham Mon Sheong Court on September 17, bringing birthday greetings to residents, wishing them health and happiness. She also spent some time chatting with residents creating a very lively day for them.
MP Andrew Scheer Visits Mon Sheong Court
Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of The Conservative Party of Canada visited Markham Mon Sheong Court on September 23, just in time to take part in a Tea Ceremony which gave MP Scheer a chance to chat with the residents.
Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant Contestants Meet with Seniors
Our Richmond Hill Long-Term Care Centre was pleased to welcome this year’s Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant Contestants on October 25. Each of the ladies joined a resident to fashion a beautiful decorative piece. Contestants also shared with our residents their musical talents, making the afternoon an enjoyable one for our residents.
Cathay Ball
Over a thousand guests gathered at Metro Toronto Convention Centre South Building on November 2 in support of the 28th Cathay Ball with the theme of “Symphony of Lights”. This year’s Cathay Ball brought the sparkle of light and warmth to the community and showcasing our “Fill the Heart, Spread Your Love” segment.
Community Christmas Party for Seniors
On December 1, 250 Chinese seniors residing downtown, participated in the 48th annual Community Christmas Party for Seniors at the Home for the Aged. Highlighted by a festive turkey lunch, the program was filled with entertaining performances, including one by local artist, Jonas M., who sang a series of classics and distributed fabulous gifts to the guests.
